Where to Get a Gluten Free Bagel In NYC
Bagels are practically a part of New York City culture, so why should we suffer without? Here are some gluten free bagels in NYC that are worth your while.
Modern Bread and Bagel
We KNEW this one was coming, and for good reason. Perhaps the most famous gluten free bakery in the US, Modern Bread and Bagel pumps out plain, everything, sesame, superseed, and cinnamon raisin bagels daily PLUS a monthly special (some of these have been strawberry, salt, blueberry, chocolate chip). Whether you’re in the mood for a bagel with cream cheese, a breakfast sandwich (vegan options too), or an open-faced bagel topped with fresh yummy combos (or pizza bagel as of late), this is gluten free bagel heaven. They also serve things like French toast sticks, latke tots, salads, breakfast burritos, quiches, and endless baked goods (try the cinnamon bun PLEASE). With 3 Manhattan locations and more on the way, this is a must try.
Tompkins Square Bagels
We know them, we love them, Tompkins Square Bagels is THE loaded bagel sandwich lord of NYC. One of the first bagel shops in NYC to carry the Eat Original Sunshine Bagel, Tompkins offers it on any of their menu items. My favorite, and the most famous, is the Weezer: 2 eggs, chorizo, bacon, cheddar, and any cream cheese you desire. I also love the Jersey (biased): PORK ROLL (they mismarked this as Taylor Ham on the menu, what?), scrambled eggs, and American cheese. They currently have 3 downtown locations with an Upper East Side one on the way!
Liberty Bagels
Not many places make their own attempt at a gluten free bagel - most outsource. Liberty Bagels, which has a line out the door always, decided to go above and beyond with their “Bagelbono”, which comes in regular and sesame. It’s gluten free, sugar free, and made with cheese! Liberty Bagels is known for some LOADED sandwiches, and I love how unique and tasty their bagel is. They also have so. many. spreads. Petition for a rainbow bagel soon? Please?
Sadelle’s
Major Food Group’s Soho brunch spot is best known for their iconic bagel lox tower - and yes, you can get it gluten free too! They make their gluten free bagel in-house, use a separate toaster, and offer it in regular and everything. Sadelle’s offers a great special occasion brunch experience, with caviar options, eggs, and great brunch bubbles. The tower is also great to share with a group, and this is a great spot for a celebratory brunch or before some good Soho shopping!
Knead Love Bakery
Knead Love Bakery ships nationwide as well as being at Union Square market on Wed/Saturday, GrowNYC Fort Green + McCarren on Saturdays, and GrowNYC UWS on Sundays. Their sourdough bagels are made in limited batches to ensure quality, and they come in plain, everything, and sesame. They also sell sourdough bread, cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats!
Black Seed Bagels
Black Seed is one of New York City’s leading bagel chains with 9 locations even though they opened as recent as 2014. They are constantly doing fun collaborations (truffle cream cheese with The Truffliest as of late), and are pretty damn consistent if you ask me. At one point, they were using Modern Bread and Bagel products but have since switched to the Eat Original Sunshine Bagel. They offer massive breakfast and lunch sandwiches, with my favorites being their Tuna Melt, Classic 2.0 (for a good pastrami smoked salmon), Pizza Bagel (pepperoni or regular), and you can even get a chopped cheese!
O’Bagel
This is technically in Hoboken (don’t kill me, I am just reporting the news), but a quick PATH ride is worth it for these bagel sandwiches. Yes, everything pictured is gluten free. I don’t make the rules but I make the gluten free rules. And the rules say that you have to get a bagel sandwich here. The Bee Sting is one of my all time favorite bagel sandwiches and it comes with bacon, scrambled eggs, melted cheddar, scallion cream cheese, and Mike’s Hot Honey. I also recommend giving them a follow on Instagram for some very fun behind the scenes content.
Utopia Bagels
Lines out the door. At both NYC locations. Located in LIC and now Murray Hill, they have my favorite loaded lox sandwich to date. This spot has been around for a while, and they truly care about the community as much as the bagels themselves. They carry the Eat Original Sunshine bagel, which is a seed-oil/ glyphosate/ soy/ dairy free, non-GMO, wheat-based bagel. (yes, they remove the gluten)(yes, it’s celiac safe)
Bagel Works
This famed Upper East Side Bagel shop serves a gluten free bagel that is not the same as other NYC shops. Do I know where it’s from? I have a nose for this stuff but NO, I cannot figure it out! However, there is always a line out the door, the bagel comes in plain and everything, and it’s a good option in the area. I would definitely opt for a sandwich here, while the bagels are tasty, they’re on the smaller side and need a little beefing up.
Pio Bagel/Rico Bagel
Even more of a rarity, these sister establishments (Pio Bagels with 1 location in Manhattan and 2 in Brooklyn, Rico Bagel with 1 location in Murray Hill) make their own gluten free bagel daily. These deli style shops make loaded breakfast and lunch sandwiches that hit the spot on a plain, everything, or sesame bagel. They also have salads, omelettes, juices, and smoothies. It has been reported that these are not celiac safe, so if you are sensitive, I would do your research first!
Sunny Day Bakery
Once sold in 7 Grain Army, they are now closed due to the fact that their production facilities closed. I am praying these bagels come back, they’re on the crispy side and were great with any of the 7 Grain Army open faced concepts - or to take home. I had to include them on this list in hopes that they come back soon!
Bare Naked Bakery
This is on Long Island, but this 100% gluten free shop came SO highly recommended that I had to include it for the good of the group! The bagels are also dairy free and come in everything, onion, plain, poppy, salt, sesame, and other daily specials. They also make breads, challah, pretzels, cakes to order, so many sweet treats, and an extensive breakfast menu that is served all day.
